The brief is rarely the brief

A client asks for a logo. That is almost never what they need.

What the brief said

An early brief I received: "We need a logo for our homestay."

Simple. One mark, one price, done in a week. That is what the words say.

What it actually needed

The logo had to work on a six-metre signboard facing the road, on a room key tag the size of a coin, embroidered on staff shirts, printed on a menu, and as a tiny profile photo on a booking site. Five sizes. Two materials. One mark.

That is the same job as "make a logo" and it is not the same job at all.

The hidden requirement was a system: a primary mark, a small-size variant that survives being twenty pixels wide, a colour set that reads both on a backlit sign at dusk and on a cream-coloured menu card, and enough spacing rules that whoever lays out the staff shirts does not have to call me.

Why clients do not say this

Because they are not designers. They do not know a logo has sizes. They know they need one, the way they know they need a plumber.

Asking "where will this appear and how small will it get" is not a technical question to them. It is the designer doing their job.

Why it matters

Because I have watched the cheap version fail. A client buys one beautiful mark. It goes on a signboard at six metres, where the fine detail disappears into the wood grain. Now the brand looks worse for having been designed. Then they pay me again to fix it.

Quoting for the real scope is not upselling. It is giving somebody an honest look at what their project contains before they commit to half of it.

The question I ask first

Not "what style do you like" and not "show me references."

I ask what the work has to survive. Where it appears, how small it gets, what sits next to it, and who is applying it without reading any instructions.

It is a less exciting way to open a project. It is also the question that stops the expensive rebuild six months later.
